Crowley is a 24-year-old Friesian gelding whose life has included both deep love and serious medical hardship. Once a cherished family horse and trusted riding companion, Crowley came to need specialized help because of corneal dystrophy, a genetic eye condition seen in some Friesian horses. Over time, the condition caused damage to his cornea and placed his vision at risk.  One eye had to be removed.

When Crowley’s future became uncertain, compassionate people stepped forward to make sure he would receive the care he needed. Thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters, Crowley underwent corneal graft surgery on his remaining eye at Cornell in December 2018. Years later, when his eye condition required additional help, the community rallied around him again and helped make a second surgery possible in 2023.

Crowley’s journey has not been easy. After one surgery, he experienced a setback while recovering from anesthesia, but his strength, veterinary care, and the support surrounding him helped him pull through. Through it all, Crowley has remained a sweet and loving horse with the gentle presence that makes Friesians so special.

Because of his ongoing eye condition, Crowley will remain at Phoenix Rising as a sanctuary horse, where he can receive the understanding, safety, and care he deserves. His story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people come together for a horse in need. Every donor, supporter, and caregiver who has been part of Crowley’s journey has helped give him something priceless: comfort, dignity, and a second chance.
