Winter’s story began on one of the coldest days of the year.

Her mother, Sahara, was a rescued 4-year-old mare who was pregnant when she came into Phoenix Rising’s care. The vets expected Sahara’s foal to arrive in late March or early April, but Winter had plans of her own. On February 16th, with temperatures dipping to minus 3 degrees, she made a surprise entrance into the world — a tiny, still-wet foal found in Sahara’s stall on a bitterly cold morning.

From the very beginning, Winter’s life was a reminder of why rescue matters. Because Sahara had a safe place to land, Winter was born surrounded by care, warmth, and people ready to help her thrive.

As she grew, Winter became known for her beauty, spirit, and promise. She was chosen as Phoenix Rising’s second “Unicorn Makeover” horse and began the important work of learning, trusting, and building confidence through training. With the support of Ella and the guidance of trainer Erin Hodgson, Winter made tremendous progress.

Her hard work led to an exciting milestone when she left the comfort of the farm to attend her very first horse show. Not only did Winter handle the new experience with courage, she earned the high score of the day — a proud moment for everyone who had believed in her from the start.

Winter’s journey shows what can happen when a rescued horse is given safety, patience, training, and love. From a surprise birth on a freezing February day to success in the show ring, Winter continues to grow into the beautiful, capable horse she was always meant to become.
