Riley

Riley has been with us for several years. He was purchased from a horse dealer to keep him from being sold at auction. He was only 6 yrs. old at the time and suffered from an intermittent lameness problem.

Riley - Oct. 2009

After consulting with several vets we decided to send him to Cornell University for surgery on his front leg. Their consensus was that without the surgery his condition would continue to deteriorate until he would ultimately have to be euthanized, even if just kept as a pasture horse.

Considering his young age and zest for life there was no question that we would try to do what we could for him.

He had a bone chip removed and 3 screws put in his pastern…the surgery went well and the vets believed he would be able to return to full use after his recovery.

He has since had his ups and downs, last year he suffered 2 bouts of lymphangytis and this year is recovering from lymphangitis secondary to phlebitis.  He seems to have a knack for finding problems!

On the plus side, Riley is a very good patient and should be ready to ride again soon!

In the meantime he is due for dental work, which will hopefully help him to gain some more weight. He put a bit on since last summer, but despite having lots and lots to eat he has remained a tad on the lean side.

We figure he’s about due for a run of good luck!
